Carlisle Baptist Church can be described as evangelical, reformed and baptist.
Our statement of faith is adapted from the 1689 Baptist Confession.
The following is our BASIS OF FAITH.
We accept the revelation of the triune God given in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments and confess the historic faith of the Gospel therein set forth, and here assert doctrines which we regard as crucial to the understanding of the Faith and which should issue in mutual love, practical Christian service and evangelistic concern.
1. The sovereignty and grace of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit in creation, providence, revelation, redemption and final judgment. Scriptures: Is. 45; Gen. 1:1; Acts 17:30-31; 1 Cor. 1:30; Eph. 1:11- 12; 2 Tim. 4:1; Heb 1:1-3.
2. The Divine inspiration of Holy Scripture and its consequent entire trust-worthiness and supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct. Scriptures: 2 Tim. 3:16; Jer. 1:9-10; 36:4, 27-28; Hab. 2:2; Luke 24:25- 27; John 10:35; Gal. 1:11-12; Heb. 1:1.
3. The universal sinfulness and guilt of fallen man, making him subject to God’s wrath and condemnation. Scriptures: Rom. 3:23; Ps. 51:5; Is. 53:6; Rom.1:18; 3:9-20; 5:18; Ez. 18:4.
4. The substitutionary sacrifice of the incarnate Son of God as the sole and all sufficient ground of redemption from the guilt and power of sin and from its eternal consequences. Scriptures: Eph. 1:7; Mark 10:45; John 3:16; Romans 3:24-25; 8:1-4; 1 Peter 2:24; 3:18.
5. The justification of the sinner solely by the grace of God through faith in Christ crucified and risen from the dead. Scriptures: Rom.3:21-31; Rom. 4:25; Eph. 2:4-9.??
6. The illuminating, regenerating, indwelling and sanctifying work of God the Holy Spirit. ?Scriptures: John 16:7-15; John 3:5; Romans 8:9-11; 1 Cor. 6:19; 2 Thess. 2:13; Titus 3:5-7.
7. The priesthood of all believers who form the universal Church, the body of which Christ is the head and which is committed by His command to the proclamation of the Gospel throughout the world. Scriptures: 1 Pet.2:4,5,9,10; Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 1:8; 1 Cor. 12:12-13, 27; Eph. 1:22-23; Rev. 1:6.
8. The expectation of the personal, visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ, in power and glory. 1 Thess. 4:13-5:3.
ORDINANCES OF THE CHURCH
We recognise the two ordinances of Believers’ Baptism and the Lord’s Supper as being of the Lord’s commanding. We hold that they are both means of grace to those who receive them in faith and that Christ is really and truly present, not in the material elements, but in the heart, mind and soul of the believer and in the Christian community which observes the ordinances.
BELIEVERS’ BAPTISM
1. The example of the Lord Jesus Christ: Matt. 3:13-17.
2. The commission of Jesus to His Church: Matt. 28:18-20.
3. The practice of the early Church: e.g. Acts 2:38; 19:47.
4. The meaning of Baptism: Romans 6:2-4.
The ordinance of Believers’ Baptism shall normally be administered to those wishing to be baptised into membership.
THE LORDS’ SUPPER
1. Instituted by the Lord Jesus Christ: Matt. 26:26-29; (See also John 6:41-65; Mk.14:22-25; Lk.22:14-20).
2. Observed by the early Church: 1 Cor. 11:17-26; Acts 20:7.
3. Warning to be heeded: 1 Cor. 11:27-34; 10:14-22.
The church building was established by a Trust Deed as a place for public religious worship by Particular or Calvinistic Baptists. The Trust Deed states that minister or pastor has therefore to be of that theology. As a church family we welcome people from a variety of backgrounds and are united in the fact that we profess repentance towards God and faith in and obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ.
